2010 CenStates Conference Wrap Up

The 2010 CenStates TTRA Conference took place last month in Springfield, Missouri, as attendees got their "Research Kicks on Route 66."  Those attending the conference at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center enjoyed a wide range of sessions, from a live focus group on social media usage, moderated by Denise Miller of Strategic Marketing and Research, to the Shatto Milk Company and their presentation on Adapting the Family Farm into an Agritourism Attraction.  That was really good milk!

Attendees, be on the lookout for the conference survey.  Your feedback is a valuable tool in helping to make the CenStates Annual Conference the best it can be.  If you were not able to attend you can see photos from the conference and download the presentations to check out what you missed. You can find both at www.censtatesttra.com.

Next year's conference will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 21-22, 2011.  Watch for more details as they become available.  If you would like to be involved in the conference planning and serve on one of the committees, please contact conference chair Alisha Valentine at avalentine@smari.com.

 From Where I Sit
By Patty Becraft, Springfield MO CVB
CenStates Chapter President

I hope you were able to attend our recent conference at the University Plaza Hotel in Springfield Missouri and that you enjoyed the conference as much as I did!

Being Chapter President and wearing the hats of both Conference Chair (in Alisha Valentine's absence) and Conference Host proved to be a challenge.  Alisha decided (without asking - I might add!) to become a new mother mid August.  Her dedication and leadership as conference chair up to the final minute before she went into labor was extraordinary.  Without her guidance, this conference would not have been such a huge success! Genealogy tourism: Discovering personal boundaries

By Carla Almeida Santos

Associate Professor at the University of Illinois

Genealogy tourism is projected as a growing sub-segment of the heritage tourism market. Indeed, major developments in information access, such as the Genealogical Society of Utah's decision to microfilm their records at no charge have propelled genealogy tourism into a popular leisure activity. Such is its popularity that the British Tourist Authority, as well as the Scottish and the Welsh Tourist Boards have all highlighted genealogy tourism as an important stimulus for inbound international travel.

To a great extent, such growth in genealogical tourism reflects both an increasing call for diversity of leisure interests and opportunities, and contemporary society's search for emotional stimuli. Read more.

Important Numbers - Confidence Interval
By Lee Crockett
The Nonprofit Survey Network

An important concept when conducting quantitative market research is the confidence interval.  Confidence interval can be defined as: The range around a survey result for which there is a high statistical probability that it contains the true population parameter. (from Quirk's Marketing Research Review)

What this really means is that there are no absolutes in market research. Read more.
