November, 2007
From your president, Aileen Thorne

Aileen at conferenceAs you know, CenStates TTRA will welcome a new president, Dan Erkkila, in January. So this is my final newsletter column, and I'll miss writing it. The truth? This is one part of my presidential responsibilities that I won't miss at all!  For some reason, it has seemed a daunting and intimidating task. Over the many years of my career I've penned hundreds of media plans and marketing rationales, and I'm comfortable in most every writing situation. So why has writing this column been at times difficult? I think it's because I do know my audience - a quite diverse group comprised of people who do research as well as those who use it. The difficult part is trying to speak with relevancy to everyone.

CenStates conference recap...and a look ahead to 2008
Conference shotA great conference in a great location! The Edgewater Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin welcomed more than 75 delegates, speakers, and sponsors from 16 states to Bob's Pretty Terrific Tourism Conference September 26-28. While CenStates TTRA competes with many other tourism educational conferences as well as state governor's conferences (and it does seem like there are more choices every year), CenStates remains a profitable conference for the association. We are indeed fortunate to have loyal and generous sponsors and repeat attendees.

The post-conference survey will tell the story, but pending those results, we predict fairly high marks -- that's because CenStates offers delegates something different than other conferences. Yes, it's about numbers and statistics, but most importantly, it's about establishing accountability for your tourism initiatives. As one first timer (and commission member of a CVB) said, "I am learning so much! We really need to bring this information back to our commission."

So mark your calendars for 2008! Next year's conference will be held in Evansville, Indiana September 24-26  at the Casino Azar. Find out more about Evansville here.
Conference speaker presentations & photos available
PanelCenStates delegates were privvy to a great deal of information from some terrific speakers. And their complete presentations are all here! Plus, dozens of great photos show the sense of commaraderie that attendees experienced at the CenStates conference. There are many other pictures in the archives as well, so if you don't see yourself, shoot us an email and we'll see what we can find.

Please Take the Conference Feedback Survey!
Bob's ConferenceSince CenStates is all about promoting travel and tourism research, we would be remiss if we didn't study the effectiveness of our own programs. If you attended the conference as a delegate, a speaker, or a sponsor, would you please take just five minutes to complete the post conference survey? Your input is invaluable as we plan for 2008. Thank you!

Iowa measures the economic impact of golf travel

golf cartGolf related travel contributed over $100 million to Iowa's economy during 2006, according to a recent study conducted by SRI International for the Iowa Golf Alliance. During the same time the total size of Iowa's direct golf economy was approximately $428.9 million. Given that approximately 5.8 million rounds of golf were played in Iowa in 2005, golf tourism trips (nearly 800,000) accounted for about 14 percent of the total rounds played. Mississippi River Country launches new marketing plan

MississippiThe ten Mississippi River states recently approved a three tier marketing plan to promote the member states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. The marketing plan will focus on 1) marketing to Japan through the travel trade and media, 2) increasing awareness of Mississippi River states to group tour markets and 3) improving Web and e-marketing programs.
